Jul 15, 2017· The town was founded in the days when the United States entered into World War I. Picher, situated at the middle of the TriState Mining District, an area covering more than 2500 square miles in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas and northeastern Okloma, became a leading national center of the lead and zinc mining industry.
The district, which extends into southwestern Missouri, northeastern Okloma, and the very southeastern corner of Kansas, was once one of the major lead and zinc mining areas in the world. From 1850 to 1950, the district produced 50 percent of the zinc and 10 percent of the lead in the United States, with production peaking between 1918 and 1941.
