Sep 14, 2011· Mill Scale Removal . Hi everyone. We are trying to remove mill scale from steel prior to a powdercoat. What acid is the best to use for the removal of mill scale and rust? I seem to recall that Sulfuric acid is a good one for mill scale, but doesn''t do the job on plasma edges. Just looking for some confirmation on my memory.

Ordinarily, I would use abrasives or electrolysis, but abrasives don''t do well with the magnetite in scale (Mohr hardness +), and electrolysis tends to put magnetite ON things.
It''s been acid dipped, rinsed, and oiled so there''s no mill scale on it. PO steel is already suitable for painting after it''s been degreased. You will find mill scale on hotrolled shapes that come straight from the rolling mill, such as angle, flats, and rounds.
Jul 24, 2002· Dave, Mill scale can be pretty tenacious sometimes. If it takes too long with a grinding wheel, a wire wheel will only take longer, if it gets it off at all. I think your best bet will be to get a stone to fit your grinder (make sure it can handle your grinders rpms) to get mill scale off.
